Then restart the server sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 force-reload sudo /etc/init.d/apache2 restart OK IT WAS HERE THAT I REALISED THAT MY SERVER WAS JUST DRUPAL AND NOT DRUPAL7 SO I ADDED TO ETC/HOSTS check over here

If so, and it says you can enable the Clean URLS option, enable it, and you're done. I added some meaningless characters to my .htdocs file to see if the it is the Allowoveride fix but the site crashed as expected. Thanks all especially sdramos for your helpful posts. This did the trick.
Be sure to uncomment AddModule mod_rewrite.c, if it is in your configuration file but has been commented out. The odd thing is that for site number 1 - clean URLs works fine.
