The overwriting of file extensions is actually disassociating the file from regular applications and somewhat similar to the problem of desktop links not working in Windows 8 | 7. it was because of the punto switcher program and the problem disappears after i exit the progam, so i sent their support an email, hopefully they will answer. Reg file aced it..... I can now start most programs by double-clicking the desktop icons. This problem is true for Firefox, Word, Skype, etc.
