I hate applying a patch I know nothing about especially to fix errors that no one seems to know much about and this after 2 years. The new version of Variable should fix this issue. Try disabling anything that might be a culprit and then clearing cache. check over here

Aliased paths created via pathauto never works (alias are created but they when you open the aliased path you get "page not found").
