well I almost threw my computer out the window! But only the i18n, you do not need the i18nmenu module. However, this patch does work, I've tested it on my local and our dev server. And my alias now work even when not in the default language of the site.

Maybe it works perfectly but you need to set up a special value somewhere, I have no idea. Why (and when) does pattern matching with f[__] perform MUCH more quickly than _f?
