Try using a different cord and/or a different jack. (Note: It might seem obvious but things happen so it's good to check... After verifying that you have a dial tone, a working filter, and a working wall jack to test your modem with and you are still unable to connect to the Internet, So somehow the ADSL was (just barely, a lot of drop-outs) working over ONE wire back to the exchange (I wouldn't have believed it unless I saw it myself), but the Anyone know how this is possible?
The filters keep the other devices from corrupting/attenuating the high frequency DSL signal. since I'm so used to dial-up, I always disconnect from the internet when I leave my comp running overnight to process videos or whatever. He reports no dial tone, even for a second. The house phone works as I took it to a friend's house and it worked find there. So now I guess we just wait and see, eh? :) Still fascinated about the 'nets working and the phone not. if it is something off-hook (or a short or something), you'll at least hear the dialtone before that times out.
